Sodium hydrosulfite (also known as sodium dithionite) is a white crystalline powder with a weak sulfurous odor. Although it is stable in the absence of air, it decomposes in hot water and in acid solutions.
Applications:
- It is primarily used in pulp and paper industry in the kraft process
- In water treatment as an oxygen scavenger agent and also as a metal’s precipitant
- In the photographic industry to protect developer solutions from oxidation
- In textile industry as a bleaching, as a desulfurizing and as a dechlorinating agent
- In leather trade for the sulfurization of tanning extracts
